As more and more modern home designs appear in our neighbourhoods, contemporary styling is also making an impact on outdoor spaces. A modern-style garden should have a slick, clean look that feels very open and minimalist – accentuating the sense of space.

Here, garden expert Dale Vine gives his top tips on how to achieve clean and contemporary (but not boring!) style in your backyard.

Clean and simple plants

Using pot plants in a contemporary garden allows the space to remain clean and simple, without the mess from garden beds.

When choosing pots, consider how many you will need to make an impact without drawing away from any views, and be careful not to create a feeling of clutter or confinement.

Often just one large-scale pot that contains an advanced plant can be all that's needed. Plants such as a mature cycad, bird-of-paradise, dragon tree, agave or even frangipani work well for this slick garden style.
