WHEN I hear the word “trendy” referring to a plant, my suspicion meter immediately springs into high alert.

Sadly, so often today’s “trendy” plant proves a complete dud in the garden. Or it’s simply so gimmicky it’s overlooked when the next trendy plant comes along.

Yet that’s not the case with one plant that’s currently got the garden professionals excitedly tossing around the trendy tag.

Cannas are easily grown from rhizomes (the fleshy bulb-like, below-ground growth). Some gardeners lift their canna rhizomes once foliage has turned scraggly in winter, yet generally they just need to be cut down 10cm above ground. Come spring they bounce back with a vengeance.

Mulch well to retain moisture and sprinkle snail pellets when new growth appears.

Clumps can be divided about every three years.

Once growing well, you’ll hail these “trendy” plants as timeless treasures.
