Were you aware that more than a third of domestic waste generated across the Mid Coast local government area (LGA) is food organics?

And, did you know your food scraps could provide you with an ongoing supply of nutrient rich compost for your garden - if these were disposed of in the right way.

International Compost Awareness Week, which runs until May 11, is the perfect time to think about the simple things that can be done to reduce waste and help the environment.

"One of the biggest benefits of composting is that it helps to minimise carbon pollution by preventing organic materials going to landfill - a bonus to the healthier soils composting creates.

"Aside from our Scraps to Soil workshops, we've also got an online tutorial and questionnaire for people who can't make one of the workshops.

"Participants in the online program can still benefit by learning how to compost and accessing the $20 compost bin offer."
