A photograph that ran in The New York Times, of a house devoured by flames with a kangaroo in the foreground, has come to symbolize the destruction wrought by the wildfires in Australia. Matthew Abbott, a photographer based in Australia, was vacationing with his family the day he accepted an assignment from The Times and took the picture. He recounted how it happened.
